There are a large number of movie formats available nowadays with the advent of technology. These techniques have their own advantages and disadvantages. Of these HD movie formats have gained wide popularity as compared to other formats. This is probably because of the high resolution they offer as compared to the standard definition formats. There are different movie formats coming from high density videos including the HDCAM, HDV, AVCHD etc. these movie formats have high quality and improved signal to noise ratio. Hence there has come so many movies directed using this technology.

Of the various HD movie formats, Matroska has been very much popular. This is an open standard free format. The file format used in Matroska can store unlimited number of tracks inside a single file. This means that a single file can store audio, video, and pictures all in one. Hence this has been universally accepted as a media for storing movies and TV shows.

The concept of Matroska is similar to other HD movie formats like AVI, MP4 and ASF. But Matroska is entirely an open source format. Matroska uses the MKV file format for storing video as well as MKA for audio only files. MKV can store audio along with video files. They create cross-platform multimedia formats.

Since Matroska is an open source, it can be used free. The technical specifications of this format are open to anyone and can be used by companies to support their products. They have various pausing and playback libraries coming in their package.

There were several limitations in making a movie with the standard and traditional formats. The poor methods used in development often limited the making of movies. The digital methods were then introduced in movie making to edit pictures and create images. These were later developed and directors started using high-end digital video cameras. Thus HD formats brought about a revolution in movie making which is used even today.
