Blu-ray - Overview

All of us have come across various disk formats over the years. Blu-ray can essentially be described as an optical disk format of next generation. As data storage requirements seem to have no limits what so ever, blue ray discs will prove to be an excellent solution for the ever creeping demands in the technical area of storage mechanisms. How will it be, if you get five folds more storage than the usual DVDs? Don’t be on your toe, that’s what blue ray offers.

The mechanism incorporated behind the construction of blu ray disc is the primary reason behind the name “blu-ray”. The technologists have adopted a combinational strategy where the blue laser and violet laser operate in tandem for reading/writing purposes. High definition video finds stupendous support in blu ray discs. The formats that are part of blue ray are ROM/R/RW, BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE. Blu-ray with a single layer can accommodate 25GB, whereas one with dual layer accommodates twice the number. It is astonishing to learn that a 50 GB disc can accommodate more than 9 hours long high definition video and the same disc holds standard definition video of about 23 hours.

From the maintenance and protection perspective, blu-ray is definitely the best in its class for meeting objectives. Earlier technologies have adopted cartridges to safe guard the discs. Here, blu-ray goes for a hard coating on its surface to keep itself aloof from scratches, which is the main problem for any DVD. Apart from that, the error detection/correction mechanism in the blu-ray disc challenges others in terms of efficiency and performance. Other main feature of blu- ray disc is that it does not require an internet connection for its primary functioning. For downloading any new features of blu-ray, one will have to go for a net connection.

Blu-ray discs are quite common in European countries these days through some leading manufactures like Sony, Philips etc. Since blu-ray is still in its childhood stage in terms of production amount and sales, the price of it is a wee bit too amicable to the higher side. But, it is expected to come down in the near future, since high definition videos find blu ray as the only best platform to deliver the best along with its fantabulous performance.

Technology has created immense revolution in the world and people have become so much accustomed to the increasing facilities that they can’t even think of a day without it. Same is the impact laid upon in the world of television by the technical advancements. Have you ever thought of a television that gives better picture quality and sound clarity. The seemingly impossible dreams have proved to be a fact with the invention of HDTV.

HDTV is the acronym for high definition television. The basic method used in this television is digital broadcasting. The digital clarity is visible in the high-quality pictures and Dolby digital sound system of the television. The main similarity and difference between the working of HDTV and ordinary television is the use of the bandwidth. Both use the same amount of bandwidth which comes to 6 megahertz. The main difference of a HDTV with an analog system is that the information transmission possible with HDTV using this bandwidth level is 6 times that of the current system using analog techniques. This can give better picture and sound clarity.

HDTV pictures are made of 1080 scanning lines as different from the 525 horizontal scanning lines of traditional televisions. This will multiply the amount of pixels as well causing HDTV to have around 2 million pixels as compared to the 300,000 pixels of ordinary TV. These high pixels can increase the sharpness of the pictures on screen enabling the viewer to read even the small texts on the TV screen as in a computer. The screens of HDTV are wider and almost resemble a movie screen. This can give a better natural vision closing to human peripheral vision.

HDTV uses data casting to broadcast data. This can enable interactive television possibilities with HDTV. Thus the end user will have a different experience in viewing television. Television will move from the old traditional concept of TV to a more advanced concept of home theater. The effect of sound and picture clarity will be compatible to that of a theater at your home.

Storage of data has changed over time with the advent of technology. The traditional methods are being replaced with much more advanced techniques which will give more chances for working with the stored data. HD DVD is the latest trend and invention came as the pride product of technology in the filed of data storage.

HD DVD, the acronym for high density DVD as the name implies a high density format designed on optical disc format. It is particularly used for storing data and high-definition video. The single layer capacity of HD DVD-ROM is around 15 GB wherein as a dual layer; it has a capacity that comes to 30GB. HD DVD can support several file systems as an optical disc formatted system. But most of the HD DVD systems now use the UDF version 2.5 as their standard file system.

They can work with a wide range of resolutions. They can give better audio experience to the users through linear PCM or Dolby TrueHD. They have the possibilities of interactive data content. HD DVD and blu ray disc seems to be working in the same aspect. But there are differences in storage capacity as well as interactive abilities and usage. Though they have similar methods of sharing and storing data, these differences bring about changes in specifications.

The main advantage of HD DVD as compared to a blu ray disc is the cheapest storage system. They can support movies on a large scale than any other competitors. The better storage space at such an attractive price can make them the favorite product of all users. They can provide backward compatibility to the present day DVD standards. HD DVDs are manufactured on a large scale by many companies as they are easier in construction with little risk involved. This is another reason for the lower price of these products. The better picture quality and the visual effects of course justify any one who is trying to get a HD DVD of his own.

There are a large number of movie formats available nowadays with the advent of technology. These techniques have their own advantages and disadvantages. Of these HD movie formats have gained wide popularity as compared to other formats. This is probably because of the high resolution they offer as compared to the standard definition formats. There are different movie formats coming from high density videos including the HDCAM, HDV, AVCHD etc. these movie formats have high quality and improved signal to noise ratio. Hence there has come so many movies directed using this technology.

Of the various HD movie formats, Matroska has been very much popular. This is an open standard free format. The file format used in Matroska can store unlimited number of tracks inside a single file. This means that a single file can store audio, video, and pictures all in one. Hence this has been universally accepted as a media for storing movies and TV shows.

The concept of Matroska is similar to other HD movie formats like AVI, MP4 and ASF. But Matroska is entirely an open source format. Matroska uses the MKV file format for storing video as well as MKA for audio only files. MKV can store audio along with video files. They create cross-platform multimedia formats.

Since Matroska is an open source, it can be used free. The technical specifications of this format are open to anyone and can be used by companies to support their products. They have various pausing and playback libraries coming in their package.

There were several limitations in making a movie with the standard and traditional formats. The poor methods used in development often limited the making of movies. The digital methods were then introduced in movie making to edit pictures and create images. These were later developed and directors started using high-end digital video cameras. Thus HD formats brought about a revolution in movie making which is used even today.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD

There have been various inventions in the field of storage media and video formatting. All these developments have brought about changes in the way users started using different Medias including movies and television. There came different methods of storage even in the filed of optical storage system itself. There came the blu ray disc storage system as well as the HD DVD system of storage.

Blu ray disc is a storage media format using the optical storage techniques. This is highly used in high definition storage for data and video with the dimensions similar to that of a standard DVD or CD. HDTV is high definition television. They can offer better resolution as compared to the standard traditional systems. They use lower bandwidth. This can give more clarity to the picture and sound as compared to normal television.

There are several differences between the storage medium offered by blu ray disc and a HDTV. They have a similar working pattern despite the differences. The differences can cause a great change in the specifications. Thus the storage capacity for a blu ray disc is higher than that allowed in a HD-DVD. While the interactivity supported in a blu ray disc is BD-J, which in a HD-DVD uses an HDi format.

The standard data transfer rate in a blu ray disc is 36 Mbps as compared to a 36.55 Mbps in a HD-DVD. Yet the video resolution appears to be similar in both with a 1080p resolution for video. There is a hard coating in blu ray disc which will be unavailable in the HD format used in HD-DVD.

There has been a tough competition prevailing in the market between the techniques used in HD-DVD and blu ray discs. There then introduced hybrid discs which can support both the techniques available in blu ray disc and HD-DVD. The high storage capacity, content and support from the leading electronics manufactures have helped blu ray in a wide scale to excel HD-DVD in the market to an extent though the other also had several advantages over blu ray disc.
